36TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE: “SEPHARDIC AND CRYPTO-JEWS IN THE EARLY SOUTH”

The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies invites proposals for presentation at its 36th Annual Conference, October 25, 2026. This Conference is entirely by Zoom, and is open to regional, national, and international submissions.
At the conference, Dr. Roger L. Martinez-Dávila, Professor of History at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, will deliver the Stanley M. Hordes Distinguished Scholar Lecture: Crypto-Judaism: The Southern Atlantic Jewish Experience. The Conference also features the annual Martin Sosin-Petit Address to Advance Scholarship in the Crypto-Judaic Arts.
- We invite proposals for papers on crypto-Judaism from any discipline (e.g., anthropology, history, sociology, philosophy, literature, music, etc.) and from any geographic location or time-period.
- We also welcome proposals for presentations on all aspects of the Sephardic experience and that of other communities exhibiting crypto-Jewish phenomena.
Proposals breaking new ground in research related to our theme, personal narratives, pedagogy or pragmatics are particularly welcome. Our conference also welcome papers focusing on personal narratives, practical workshops, and discussion of relevant issues. Our Zoom conference has limited presentation slots; priority may be given to organized panels.
Proposals responding to this Call should be new research, narratives, or lectures not previously presented elsewhere; Accepted proposals will normally have about 20 minutes per presenter, with additional discussion as time allows.
Presentations must be in English.
Please follow this format for all proposals: (1) proposal title (2) presenter name, (3) email, (4) an abstract of up to 200 words, and (5) a brief bio (3-4 lines), including relevant affiliation and academic title if any. We particularly welcome Organized Panels of one hour to 90 minutes! Typically, these include two or three papers, but workshops or roundtables may be considered. Panel Organizers submit the session title, organizer’s email, a brief description of the session with the names and emails of participants, and a 3-4 line bio of the organizer. Organized panel participants may submit their abstracts individually, or the Panel Organizer may send all the abstracts together.
Presenters must register to present their papers at the conference.
The Society is examining prospects for publishing a volume based on selected papers delivered at our conferences.
