About The Speaker:

A portrait of an older man with graying hair wearing a light purple button-down shirt.Four years ago, Bruce Grossman published a book about his discovery of New Mexico and the ensuing connection to his deepest Jewish identity. At the time, he thought there was a pretty good story to tell about his 50 years of living in this wayward outpost from the perspective of a man who never imagined the outcome.

In his own words, “I still think it’s a worthy story that is part memoir and part history, a hybrid that I had been warned against, but, being a natural contrarian, did anyway. I have no regrets.”

Book cover for No One Came to Taos to Be Jewish by Bruce Grossman, featuring a painting of a mountain landscape at sunset. The book details the emergence of a vibrant group of outliers, seekers, artists, and musicians who miraculously created a Jewish community in Taos over the last several decades. This talk will bring you closer to the fact that New Mexico has been home to Jews from many places for a very long time. Not our usual fare delving into crypto-Jewish history, but meaningful just the same. With luck, that which is hidden eventually emerges.
